Rail Locomotive Electronic Control Sytems -- Data Storage
Problem
The customer needed a highly reliable, removable storage device to be used in a data-logging application on a train. The operating environment is harsh with significant shock, vibration and temperature issues. Should a data error occur, the locomotive's automatic braking system is designed to engage. This interruption could ultimately result in a significant amount of time being lost and have a tremendous financial impact to the rail company.
Application
The storage unit is used to record multiple statistics on the operational parameters and performance of the locomotive. It also records the engineer's actions as the information dynamically changes. The specially designed display console required a serial interface on a storage device needing less than 100MB of storage capacity. The requirement for extreme reliability in this challenging operating environment was the critical criteria.
Solution
Adtron provided the customer with an extended temperature qualified (-40 to +85 C), flash-based removable storage system. The design facilitates the data storage media removal by the engineer at the end of each trip for uploading to the central host computer.
Benefits
Adtron provided the customer a highly reliable, very rugged, removable storage device. The customer has a controlled bill-of-materials (BOM) with Adtron, assuring continued availability and the highest degree of compatibility with their systems.
