Adtron Introduces First iSCSI ATCA Storage Blade
Model EA8R Delivers RAID 5 In-Chassis Functionality
CANNES, France (3GSM World Congress) - February 15, 2005 - Adtron, an industry leader in delivering smart data storage solutions to the industrial marketplace, today introduced the Adtron EA8R iSCSI storage blade, a first for the telecommunications industry. The Adtron EA8R Bladepak™ device delivers an enterprise-class solution optimized for networked storage in an industry-standard PICMG® 3.0 AdvancedTCA® form factor. The blade utilizes Adtron™ ActiveRAID™ technology. Incorporating four (4) enterprise-class hard disk drives the blade provides up to 292 GBytes of RAID0 capacity or 219 GBytes of RAID 5 capacity in a single ATCA™ chassis slot.
The Adtron EA8R blade will be on display at the 3GSM World Congress in Hall 4, Stand L18 and operational in Intel's next generation ATCA chassis in the 3GSM Intel Villa. The Adtron EA8R iSCSI storage blade uses the Intel® IOP321 I/O Processor with Intel XScale® technology running iSCSI Target software to provide the I/O processing on the storage blade over the GigE interface. Adtron's EA8R delivers high performance and the ability to manage data storage and retrieval with support for multiple hosts. Two backplane connected Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) interfaces ensure redundancy in a dual star configuration. Gigabit Ethernet and iSCSI provide a storage device that is not dependent on a particular operating system. Platforms based on the Motorola® HA-Linux, Sun™ Solaris™ or Microsoft® Windows® operating systems benefit from the flexibility of Adtron's new EA8R storage solution.
Designed to deliver high availability, Adtron ActiveRAID™ technology delivers RAID0 or RAID5 functionality at the storage blade level. The Adtron EA8R storage blade is hot swappable at the board level and each of the four (4) hard disk drives are easily accessible via a removable front panel and individually hot swappable providing enhanced serviceability. "Moving the RAID features directly onto the storage blade relieves the host CPU to perform its primary functions," explained Alan Fitzgerald, Adtron Chief Technology Officer. "In high availability telecom platforms, Adtron ActiveRAID technology increases the availability of the least reliable component - the hard disk - without impacting other critical functions."
"The Intel IOP321 offers customers like Adtron the ability to deliver high performance and reliable solutions," said Seth Bobroff, Director of Market Development for Intel's Storage Components Division. "Because of its high performance, low power and integration, Intel's IOP based on XScale® technology enables equipment makers, such as Adtron, to deliver powerful solutions into the blade market."
The Adtron EA8R blade is ideal for early ATCA adopters to incorporate in their introductory proof-of-concept and production platforms. The blade is very well suited to serve a myriad of high capacity, high availability wireless and wireline telecom applications that can benefit from networked storage including VoIP, MMS, CRBT, HLR/VLR and Prepaid Services. Shipments will begin in 2Q 2005. For more information, contact Adtron Sales at 602-735-0300 or by e-mail at sales@adtron.com.
