Most consumer solid state disks (SSDs), such as USB sticks, are made with multi level cell (MLC) NAND flash chips. Most commercial and industrial grade SSDs, such as those manufactured by Adtron, contain single level cell (SLC) NAND. A 1 MByte SLC NAND chip is equivalent to a 2 MByte MLC NAND chip in terms of size and space it occupies inside the solid state disk. However, MLC NAND data is stored with much tighter tolerances and requires more logic, and thus more overhead, to correctly encode and decode the data. This additional overhead slows the IDE flash disk and makes it less reliable.
In consumer applications, such as photography or music, if a bit is deciphered incorrectly, the result is virtually unnoticeable. In industrial applications, a data bit that is deciphered incorrectly can have serious impact on the mission-critical applications. For commercial and industrial applications, select an SSD that is engineered and manufactured with SLC NAND.
Best of all, implementing this or any IDE flash drive from Adtron requires no system modification and uses the industry-standard ATA interface, connecting via IDE controllers found in most computers today. There are three IDE flash disk offerings in the family. The I25F provides an economically viable entry point for some industrial applications requiring SSDs where capacity and performance are secondary to the durability and reliability attributes. The I25F is available in capacities from 256 KB to 8 GB. The I25FB provides high capacity, up to 56 GB, in a 2.5" form factor with all the performance advantages of ArrayPro technology. The I35FB offers a standard 3.5" form factory with ArrayPro technology and capacities up to 128 GB.
